How Much Does a Shopify Store Cost in 2026? (USA, UK, Australia & NZ)

The true cost of a Shopify store depends on your plan, design, apps and how much custom development you need. Here are realistic budgets for 2026, with typical ranges for the USA, UK, Australia and New Zealand.

By the OneNext Solutions team · 8 min read · Updated 8 November 2026

1. Shopify plan costs

At the time of writing, Shopify plans start at around $39 per month (Basic), with higher plans for growing businesses and Shopify Plus for high-volume brands. Plan prices change from time to time and vary slightly by country, so always check Shopify's official pricing page. Annual billing usually gives a discount.

2. Theme costs

  • Free themes - good for very early-stage stores
  • Premium themes - a one-off fee, typically a few hundred dollars
  • Custom themes - designed and built around your brand and customer journey

3. Typical design and development budgets

Project typeUSAUKAustraliaNew Zealand
Theme setup and customization$5k-$20k£5k-£15kA$8k-A$25kNZ$8k-NZ$25k
Bespoke design and build$25k-$80k+£20k-£60k+A$35k-A$100k+NZ$35k-NZ$90k+
Shopify Plus build$60k+£50k+A$90k+NZ$80k+

These are typical market ranges, not fixed prices. Your budget depends on the number of templates, integrations, data migration and content.

4. Apps

Most stores use 5-15 apps for reviews, email, search, subscriptions, loyalty and shipping. Budget anywhere from $50 to $1,000+ per month depending on your stack - and remove apps you no longer use, as they also slow your store down.

5. Payment processing

Using Shopify Payments avoids extra transaction fees on standard plans. Card rates vary by plan and country.

6. Ongoing costs to plan for

  • Support and maintenance retainer
  • Conversion rate optimization and A/B testing
  • SEO and content
  • Email and SMS marketing

How to keep costs under control

  1. Start with a strong theme and customize it rather than building everything from scratch.
  2. Prioritize features that directly affect conversion and revenue.
  3. Audit apps every quarter.
  4. Work with one partner for build and growth to avoid hand-over costs.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

A DIY store can cost a few hundred dollars plus your plan. Agency-built theme stores typically range from about $5,000 to $20,000, and bespoke or Shopify Plus builds usually start from around $25,000.

Expect your Shopify plan, payment processing fees, app subscriptions and optional ongoing support or marketing. Many growing stores spend a few hundred to a few thousand dollars per month in total.

Shopify Plus is usually worth it once you need B2B features, checkout customization, automation, multiple stores or higher API limits - typically for brands with high or fast-growing revenue.
